Advanced bioreactor technology bridges the price gap between renewable production and fossil production of butanol

Biotechnology provides novel opportunities for sustainable production of existing and new chemicals, often focusing on strain development. However, state-of-the-art fermentation processes, especially those that make inhibitory-to-microorganism products, are characterized by low productivities and titers. In this technical report, we show how DAB.bio’s unique bioreactor technology, termed Fermentation Accelerated by Separation Technology (FAST), increases overall butanol productivity 2.4 fold, and doubles the productive phase of a pilot-scale fermentation. FAST lowers production costs by 60%, enabling bio-butanol and other biobased compounds to cost-compete with fossil-based chemicals.
